Abstract:

The study focuses on the diverse forms of copper lunchboxes which have Armenian inscriptions or have Armenian names stamped in Armenian, Arabic or Latin letters. Based on 24 samples, the study describes and details these lunchboxes highlighting their differences in shape and form. Some of these lunchboxes have one to four tiers; they may be made of red or yellow copper and may be oval or round shaped. The author notes that most of the lunchboxes which were produced as of the late 19th century are semi-industrialized as they were produced from imported European copper sheets, unlike the older ones which were totally produced in the local furnace of the craftsman. The article lists all the names, inscriptions and stamps found on the lunchboxes: Adoor Arslanian, Abadjian(?) 1923, Apraham Setoian, Apraham son of Yeghia 1659, Arslanian brothers, Aintab, Arslanian brothers Aleppo, Boyadjian, Dzadoor Nahhas 1301 [=1883], Dzadoor Nerses Nahas 1301 (=1883), Garabed Kalemkiarian Aintab, Kalemkerian Freres Cham [Damascus] 1921, Nahhas, Sakar, Sarkis Chemberdjian, son of pilgrim Krikor 1744. The author notes, however, that though the oldest lunchboxes are dated 1659 and 1744, unfortunately they do not mention their place of origin.
