Abstract:

The study highlights the role the Nor Arabkir Teghekatoo (Nor Arabkir Bulletin) played in the life of the Arabkir Armenians in both the Diaspora and Soviet Armenia. The Nor Arabkir Teghekatoo was first launched in 1925 in the USA by the Compatriotic Union of Arabkir Armenians in Western Armenia, who had first arrived in the USA as econiomic migrants with the dream of making some money and returning home to improve the financial conditions of the family. Due to the Hamidian massacres of 1894-96 a number of Arabkir Armenians had found refuge in the USA. The author notes that the role of these compatriotic unions changed according to the needs of the community back home. Indeed, the continuous heartbreaking news of the homeland made these expatriates think about organizing a union to support the homeland by financing the building of schools and supporting education. Eventually, however, after the Genocide of 1915-23 and the dispersion of the remnants of the Arabkir Armenians, the members of the committee planned to construct a residential quarter in Soviet Armenia, close to Yerevan, and financially support the repatriation of Arabkir Armenians to this newly constructed area, which was to be called Nor (New) Arabkir in memory of the lost hometown, and perpetuate the hometown's name. The author reasons that the Nor Arabkir Bulletin was the main medium in promoting the idea of the construction, repatriation and resettlement of the decimated Arabkir Armenians in this new residential area of Soviet Armenia. The author maintains that the role of the Bulletin went far beyond this. It became a means of bonding the Arabkir Armenians spread all over the world, published stories on the growth and development of the new residential area of Nor Arabkir, published news on the marriage, birth/baptism, passing away and educational and economic achievements of Arabkir Amenians, and covered the news of public events organized by the different branches of the compatriotic union.
