Abstract:

After a short definition of the term Destan as a poetic, oral and written genre in Near Eastern literature spread widely in Persia and India as well as among Turkic tribes, and the Kurds, the author notes that the term was used by medieval Armenian poets, like Frig (13th century), Gosdantin Yerzengatsi (2nd half of the 13th century), Hovhannes Telgurantsi (3rd quarter of the 15th century), Krikoris Aghtamartsi (early 16th century), etc. Based on a rich collection of Destans authored by Armenians in the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century, the paper theorises the genre, in its Armenian context, as a genre authored by Armenians, written in the Turkish language and in Armenian letters. In this regard it is defined as an oral poem sometimes up to 50 verses long, which narrates a historic event/tragedy (like the deportation, uprooting, and exile of the Armenians and the Genocide), or their return to the homeland after the Ottoman Empire lost WWI, the self-defense battles the Armenians fought against Kemalist forces, the Izmir catastrophe, the second exile, sufferings in the refugee camps, hardships in the hostlands and the burning of the camps, the new life trends that ran contrary to traditional, mid-twentieth century Armenian perceptions, repatriation and love of the fatherland. Arguably the first study in the Armenian langauge, the paper sheds light on the authors, and notes that some of these Destans were published as separate 'books,' others were published in literary journals or individual books dedicated to the history of a lost Armenian city, town or village and some are still not published. In the end, for the first time ever, the paper presents the titles of over 50 Destans.
