Abstract:

Matsnaberd is one of the notable fortresses of northeastern Armenia. Situated in the province of Utik in Greater Armenia, it served as the center of the Matsnaberd feudal principality in the 12th–13th centuries. The principality was founded around 1113 by David, son of King Kiurike I (c. 1049–1089) of the Kiurikian Dynasty, after the fall of the Kiurikian kingdom, when he established himself at Matsnaberd. The Kiurikians of Matsnaberd were one of the minor feudal houses of northeastern Armenia. They were vassals of the Zakarids and maintained political, marital, and familial ties with neighboring Armenian principalities as well as with the Georgian Orbelians. Information about the principality and the fortress of Matsnaberd is relatively scarce. In 1236, during the reign of Aghsartan II, Matsnaberd was temporarily conquered by the Mongols. In the 1250s, its ruler, Taghiadin, participated in Mongol campaigns, while his son Sargis is known as the last representative of the Matsnaberd principality. The Kiurikians of Matsnaberd were active participants in the spiritual and cultural life of northeastern Armenia. The principality survived until the late 13th century. Scholarly literature offers differing opinions regarding the exact location of Matsnaberd. In recent years, a dominant view (A. Shahnazaryan, R. Simonyan, T. Aleksanyan) has identified it with Aghjkaberd, situated within the administrative territory of the village of Aygedzor in Tavush Province, Armenia. However, we consider more plausible the view advanced by another group of scholars (M. Barkhudaryants, M. Hovhannesyan, S. Barkhudaryan, S. Karapetyan), who identify Matsnaberd with Mlznaberd, located about 2.5 km. from the village of Chovdar (Armenian Hartshangist) in the Dashkasan district of the present-day Republic of Azerbaijan.
