Abstract:

The paper focuses on the role photography played in documenting and validating the Armenian Genocide. Indeed, photography is a unique means of combining documentation, visual account and memory politics. Based on the work of a number of photography theorists, the author’s argument is that photos confirm historical facts, consolidate written accounts of Armenian and foreign eye witnesses on the Armenian Genocide and at the same time constitute bearers of cultural memory. In fact, they enable us to visualize not only the extent of physical losses but the losses of cultural and ethnographic heritage as well as ethnographic features that disappeared due to the Genocide. In time these photos are transformed into institutionalised memory, means of identity preservation, and political witness, accordingly enabling the photos to acquire features of moral responsibility and a role for the gfenerations after the time of the Genocide. The author lists specifically the non-Armenian individuals whose photos were pivotal in documenting the different stages of the Genocide and its aftermath. The author highlights in particular the photographic legacy of Armin T. Wegner (1886–1978), Viktor Pietschmann (1881–1956), Bodil Bjørn (1871–1960), Jakob Küntzler (1862-1949), Grace H. Knapp (1870 1953), Hermann Goltz (1946–2010) and members of the staff of the Near East Relief organization. These individuals were able to disseminate the photos, which made it impossible to deny the annihilation process. Among other things these photos were used as tools to promote humanitarian aid.
