Abstract:

The policy of uprooting, deportation, massacres and annihilation that the Turkish ruling authorities of the Committee of Union and Progress implemented during WWI on the Armenians of the Ottoman Empire and their trials and tribulations did not go unnoticed by the Artsakh Armenians. The article, the first of its kind, sheds light on the efforts that the Artsakh Armnenians undertook to relieve the sufferings of their brothers. The paper details the formation of the «Fraternal help committee» and its parallel «Women's committee» and the role played in mobilizing financial and humanitarian support among the Artsakh Armenians for their suffering brethren. Under the direct leadership of the prelate of Shusi, Father Zaven Babayan, these two launched fundraising campaigns, collected clothing and food, and transferred them to Etchmiadzin, which had become a refugee hub, from which the refugees were dispersed all over Armenian populated areas of Eastern Armenia and beyond. Alongside their fundraising activities these committees were instrumnental in settling a number of refugees and orphans, particularly in Shushi and Kantsag, designating spaces for sick and exhausted refugees in hospitals, and allocating orphanages for the orphans. The paper notes that, notwithstanding the socioeconomic hardships the Artsakh Armenians were facing, the diverse layers of the local community, like the teachers, women, students, individuals and people of all walks of life felt a moral obligation and did all they could to relieve the sufferings of the the decimated Armenian refugees who headed to Artsakh.
