Abstract:

The article highlights an unpublished document related to the renowned mid-19th century Ottoman imperial industrialist and chemist Hovhannes Dadian. Hovhannes Dadian came from an eminent family that, thanks to their services to the Ottoman palace, were granted the title of Amira. It was Arakel Dadian (1753-1812) who served first as the Ottoman Imperial head of the gunpowder section under the Sultan Selim III (1761-1808). In 1843, in recognition of his remarkable achievements in the chemical industry, the Institute of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts granted Hovhannes Dadian (Ohannis Dadian) the «Diploma, [of] the Royal Scottish Society of Arts, in favor of Ohannis Dadian, 1843» and welcomed Dadian as an honorary member of the Society. Alongside publishing the document, the article highlights the achievements of the Dadian family in general and of Hovhannes Dadian specifically and their philanthropic acts of opening schools and renovating churches. The document is preserved in the archives of the Sardabad Ethnographic Museum in Armenia under the code 8856/1, 2.
