Abstract:

In 1884-1917, the Yerevan Announcements weekly was published in Yerevan. It was first published in Armenian, for some time in Russian («Эриванскiя объявленiя») and later also bilingually. It was published at private house N 41 on Caravanserai Street (now parallel to Abovyan Street, up to Tumanyan Street) 1-3 times per week. The editor-in-chief of the newspaper was Emin Ter-Grigoryan, a graduate of the Moscow Lazarian Seminary and a famous cultural figure. It was distributed free of charge, and the expenses connected with printing were covered by advertising fees. Up to this day, the weekly newspaper has remained an inexhaustible source for studying various aspects of the internal urban everyday life of old Yerevan, which continues to be of great interest even a century later. In the present essay, based primarily on the materials contained in the Yerevan Announcements weekly, the grocery stores operating in the city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries have been separated. They have been divided into the following groups: confectionery, dairy products, sausages and groceries. Prices of products were given, which also allows us to form a general idea of the lifestyle and purchasing power of Yerevan residents of the aforementioned period. The essay discusses the names of stores, the vocabulary and content used in advertisements, and attention is also paid to innovations that penetrated into the everyday lives of urban residents, such as chocolate, cocoa, ice cream, a new assortment of pastries (kulich, pretzels, French buns), etc. It should be noted that the grocery stores operating in old Yerevan did not fully meet the needs of urban residents. They were supplemented in another way: the overwhelming majority of Yerevan residents were engaged in gardening and vegetable growing, which allowed them to have an abundance of fruits and vegetables in the summer months and dried fruits and canned products in the winter months. In addition, milk, egg and bakery sellers walked around the city every day. These came from nearby villages and sold their agricultural products. Summarizing the abovementioned, it should be noted that the present report may make a certain contribution to the presentation of the ethnographic characteristics of old Yerevan, which has not yet become the subject of a separate and comprehensive study.
