Abstract:

The Armenian language used in the diaspora (Սփիւռք) represents two branches of Ashkharabar: Western Armenian and Eastern Armenian, with their many dialects and local speech. In addition to the names of the two branches of Ashkharabar, the Armenian press also uses the name սփիւռքահայերէն (spurqahayeren) “Armenian language of the Diaspora”, which is an occasionalism and has not been fixed in scientific literature yet. It is rather a general name used to designate the Armenian language used abroad and has been intensively influenced by foreign languages. Similar functions are performed by the name արաբահայերէն (arabahayeren), “Arabic Armenian”, which is traditionally used to designate colloquial Armenian used in the countries of the Arab world and which has experienced the impact of foreign linguistic thinking with dominant Arabic-language elements. In the 19th century, local linguonyms appeared and even found some reflection in scientific literature, being defined as “the Armenian language used in a particular country”. This concerns such linguonyms as ամերիկահայերէն (amerikahayeren) “American Armenian” – the language of American Armenians, պարսկահայերէն/իրանահայերէն (parskahayeren/iranahayeren) “Iranian Armenian” – the language of Iranian Armenians, ֆրանսահայերէն (fransahayeren) “French Armenian” – the language of French Armenians, etc. These colloquial variants of the Armenian language differ from each other in intonation, vocabulary, influence of this or that linguistic thinking, calqued phraseological units and word constructions. Lexical units used to designate foreign variants of the Armenian language are aimed at identifying the areal characteristics of the Armenian language and, as a result, have sociolinguistic significance, too. Other similar words can also be formed by analogy with these lexical units. Despite the fact that certain names designating the Armenian language of the diaspora are sometimes encountered in scientific speech, they are, nevertheless, more characteristic of the language of the press and retain an occasional nature. These linguonyms have not been included in dictionaries of neologisms or word-formation.
