Abstract:

Theoretical and numerical simulations reveal negative differential conductivity in DNA-based p⁺nn⁺ long structures operating under carriers’ double injection mode. The calculated impedance exhibits distinct resistive and reactive components whose frequency dependence enables transitions between capacitive and inductive behavior. The simulations also show that deep energy levels associated with sugar-phosphate groups surrounding the DNA play a key role in forming the region of negative differential conductance. These results suggest that DNA-based structures can function as nanoscale resistive and reactive elements in AC circuits. In particular, their impedance characteristics could enable the realization of molecular RC, RL, and RLC filters for frequency-selective signal processing. Moreover, the calculated impedance response provides a potential approach for probing the energy spectrum of molecular groups in DNA. These findings establish a physical basis for the development of DNA-based functional elements for molecular electronics and bioelectronic circuits.
