Abstract:

This article examines the lexico graphic value of Ambrosios Galfayan's A Guide to Conversation in English and Armenian (Paris, The dictionary's five part structure is presented, ranging from thematic word lists to model letters. Through detailed etymological analysis, two distinct layers are distinguished: loanwords transmitted from Turkish, and those borrowed from European languages. The first layer comprises predominantly words of a do mestic and commercial character, whose etymological trajectories extend back to Persian, Arabic, and Ancient Greek roots. The second layer examines loanwords borrowed from European languages The study demonstrates that Galfayan's work constitutes a valuable primary source for the study of the spoken language of Constantinople Armenians, multilingual contact, and the lexical modernization of Western Armenian in the mid- nineteenth century.
