Abstract:

During the medieval times many toponyms around the area indicated by the convergence of Iran, Turkey and Azerbaijan borders were given the prefix “kara” or “ghara”. Although this prefix is understood today to mean black in the locally spoken variety of Turkish, scholars maintain that during the medieval period it did not signify black but large. It should further be noted that in modern standard Turkish, the word for black is siyah, a loanword of Persian origin, rather than kara. With this assumption, most toponyms bearing this prefix found in many parts of the world become meaningful. The paper explains in detail the false impression created by this mistranslation and all the toponyms find their logical explanations.
