Abstract:

Archbishop Karapet Bagratuni is one of the spiritual figures who has truly left a great mark on the history of the Armenian Diocese of Georgia. His role and efforts in improving the educational, cultural and social life of the Georgian-Armenian people are undeniable, despite the disagreements, criticisms and accusations of his activities. My study is based on numerous documents from the National Archive of Armenia, the Alexander Yeritsyan Fund in the Matenadaran Archives and other written sources related to the activities of Archbishop Karapet Bagratuni. I have prepared for publication a remarkable document, in which Archbishop Karapet, refuting the accusations made by Chief Prosecutor Matinov, presents his dedicated activities directed towards the welfare of the Armenian Church and people. The study of the statement provides an opportunity to talk about a prolific Armenian spiritual figure who, during the 20 years of his leadership, greatly reformed and improved the spiritual, economic, social, and especially educational and cultural life of the Georgian-Armenian people, and also established close relations with the state and spiritual authorities of Georgia and Russia. The events discussed in this document provide the best characteristic of the spiritual life of Armenians in that period, as well as the relations with the local and central administrations.
Архиепископ Карапет Багратуни – один из духовных деятелей, оставивших заметный след в истории армянской епархии Грузии. Несмотря на разногласия, критику и обвинения в его адрес, его роль и усилия, вложенные в улучшение образовательной, культурной и социально-экономической жизни армян Грузии, неоспоримы. Основой для нашего исследования послужили многочисленные документы, хранящиеся в Национальном архиве Армении и архиве Матенадарана (фонд Александра Ерицяна). Мы подготовили к публикации документ, в котором, в опровержение обвинений старшего прокурора Матинова, архиепископ Карапет представляет свою самоотверженную деятельность, направленную на благосостояние Армянской Церкви и армянского народа. Изучение документа дает возможность говорить о духовном деятеле, ко-торый за 20 лет своего руководства значительно реформировал и улучшил духовную, экономическую, социальную и особенно образовательную и культурную жизнь армян, сформировал прочные связи с государственными и духовными властями Грузии и России. События, о которых идет речь в документе, наилучшим образом характеризуют духовную жизнь армян того периода, а также их отношения с местной и центральной администрацией.
