This article is dedicated to the philosophy of art by Nobel Prize laureate and German national poet Günter Grass. Its focuses on Grass‟s understanding of art and reality, ambivalence and relativism, his con-ception of imagination and reflection and the position of the language in it. In addition, the paper presents the interrelationship between Grass‟s philosophy of art and its expression in narration. The focus of the consideration is the novels “The Tin Drum” and “A Wide Field”. Finally, the article pays special attention to Grass‟s concept of reflection, which is placed in the philosophical context of the Romantic understanding of irony. This allows parallels to be drawn between Schlege‟s and Grass‟s philosophical positions.
