Abstract:

The analysis of the famous first ghazal of Hafez’s Divan can serve as a model to understand the poetic features of the “Hafezian ghazal”. It both epitomizes the experience of the achievements of the early traditions of Persian verse and brings the ghazal to ideological and formal perfection. This ghazal lacks leitmotif; the bayts are in dynamics, each creating a new situation in the “poet-world” perception. Yet, with the independence of the bayts and the diversity of motives and themes, the Hafezian ghazal reflects the unity of Persian culture and its aesthetic consciousness. In the ghazal, Hafez skillfully balances the traditional and the new, the real and the mystical, the secular and the religious, the philosophical reflection and the moralistic maxim. In this we see the paradox of the genius of “Hafezian ghazals”.
