Abstract:

Among the numerous legends on Christianity the story of Hripsimean Virgins’ martyrdom due to its dramatic undertones was noteworthy, thus becoming a recurrent theme in the European travelers’ notes about Armenia. The story underwent several modifications in travelogues. Those modifications were conditioned by the mode of providing information i.e. in some cases the information was obtained from written sources (intertextual borrowing), while in other cases via oral sources when information was conveyed by the speaker (expedient) to the listener (recipient). In the process of myth creation the main components of creativity are activated, the traveler’s imagination and fantasy in the interpretation of a hagiographic legend constructed in accordance with the author’s understanding and attitude towards the reproduction, play a decisive role. As a result a product based on individual creative fantasy comes into existence.
