Արցախը հին Հայաստանի տասնհինգ նահանգներից մեկն էր և զգալի դեր էր խաղում նրա սոցիալ-տնտեսական, հասարակական ու քաղաքական կյանքում։ Այն արևմուտքում սահմանակցվում էր Սյունիքի, իսկ արևելքում՝ Ուտիքի հետ։ Նրա հարավային սահմանն անցնում էր Արաքս գետով,իսկ հյուսիսայինը՝ այժմյան Աղստև գետի վտակ Ոսկեպարի (Ջողազի)արևմտյան ափերով։ Artsakh was one of the fifteen provinces of ancient Armenia and played a significant part in its social, economic and political life. In its west it bordered on Sunik and east on Utik. Its southern frontier ran along the River Araks and the northern along western bank of the tributary Voskepar (Joghasi) of the present Aghestev River.
