По сообщению историографа Степаноса Орбеляна, вокруг Татевского монастыря была воздвигнута крепостная ограда в начале X века, по инициативе духовного предводителя Сюника епископа Ованеса. В первой и второй половине XI века, по инициативе епископов Ованеса (1006–1058) и Григория (1058–1116), над прилегающими к ограде западным и восточным входами были построены арочные ворота – с апсидами и церквями. Западный вход со своими апсидами Св. Карапета до нас не дошел, но в 1980-е годы был реставрирован восточный вход у северной ограды – вместе с однонефной и надворотной церквями Св. Богородицы (построены в 1087 г.). После археологических раскопок 2014–2015 гг. был восстановлен открытый в 1875 г. по инициативе игумена монастыря архимандрита Степаноса Мхитарянца (1873–1876) северный вход, для которого арочным сквозным залом служило бывшее сооружение монастырского родника.
Оно является подобием расположенного в центре села родника и, по всей вероятности, было построено в тот же период – в 1745 г., по инициативе духовного предводителя Сюника архимандрита Ованеса Каламянца (1867– 1870, 1879–1884, 1885–1886). Сделав входом бывшее сооружение родника, архимандрит Степанос перенес воду к новооткрытому входу – построив для нового родника несравнимо меньший по размерам родник-памятник. Составленную по этому поводу в 1875 г. эпиграфическую надпись расшифровал и опубликовал архиепископ Месроп Магистрос Тер-Мовсисян. Проблема существования и датировки входов косвенно проливает свет на дальнейшую судьбу прилегающего к ограде монастырского родника, который сегодня видоизменился в арочный зал входа, временно закрыв настоящий и основной вход монастыря – восточные ворота.
According to historiographer Stepanos Orbelyan, a fortification was erected around Tatev Monastery at the beginning of the 10th century on the initiative of the spiritual leader of Syunik, Bishop Hovhannes (1006–1058). In the first and second halves of the 11th century, on the initiative of Bishops Hovhannes and Gregory (1058–1116), arched gates with apses and churches were built over the western and eastern entrances adjacent to the fortification. The western entrance with its apses of St. Karapet did not reach us, but in the 1980s, the eastern entrance near the northern fortification was restored together with the one-nave and over the gate churches of Holy Mother of God (built in 1087). After the archaeological excavations in 2014–2015, the northern entrance, opened in 1875 on the initiative of the abbot of the monastery Archimandrite Stepanos Mkhitaryants, was restored, for which the former spring building of the monastery served as an arched hall. It is similar to the spring located in the center of the village and, most likely, it was built in the same period - in 1745, on the initiative of the spiritual leader of Syunik, Archimandrite Hovhannes Kalamyants (1867–1870, 1879–1884, 1885–1886). By making the former structure of the spring an entrance, Archimandrite Stepanos moved the water through the newly opened entrance, building an incomparably smaller spring-monument for the new spring. The epigraphic inscription compiled on this occasion in 1875 was deciphered and published by Archbishop Mesrop Magistros Ter-Movsisyan. The problem of the existence and dating of the entrances indirectly sheds light on the future fate of the monastery spring adjacent to the fortification, which today has changed into an arched entrance hall, temporarily closing the real and main entrance of the monastery – the eastern gates.
