Armenian-Byzantine Relation In Art From The Early Middle Ages To The End Of 11th Century
Центр поддержки арменистических исследований. Москва
Armenian-Byzantine cultural relation formed since the establishment of Byzantine Empire and continued during the whole Middle ages. Armenian-Byzantine connections in art and architecture were very close and fruitful especially during the early Christian era. The periods of cultural upswings in Armenia always conformed to the activity of political and cultural contacts with Byzantium. Such monuments as Zvartnots, Aruch, Mren (7th century) which are famous for their architecture as well as for sculpture and fresco decoration, prove the existence of powerful contacts between Armenia and Byzantium. The iconography types of the reliefs of Armenian steles (6-7th century) went back to the Byzantine origins. Such illustrated manuscripts as the Gospel of Mlke (862), the codices of “the school of Ani” (middle of 11th century), the group of “Byzantic Armenian manuscripts”(11th century) show, that there was Byzantine artistic current in the Armenian miniature painting. The very important period of Armenian-Byzantine cultural relation was violated in the end of 11th century by Seljuk invasion.
