Abstract:

In the ethnogenesis of the Armenians most problematic is the problem of identification of the bearers of the proto-Armenian language. In contemporary studies all the existing theories can be subdivided into three groups distinguished in identification of the historically attested prototypes of the Armenian ethnonym Hay (only J.Markwart built his hypothesis on the basis of the etymology of the ethnonym Armen). According to these theories, Hay is derived from the ethno-toponyms Hatti, Hayasa, and Etiuni, respectively. The author presents and critically evaluates the existing theories in the light of linguistic, historical, and archeological data.
