Abstract:

The relations between the Armenian Church and diophysite Churches during the Centimes were highly tense on account of various understanding of the christological dogma. The Armenian church has not accepted the dogma of two naturcs in Christ, adopted by 4-th ecumenical council in Chalcedon. Armenians supposed, that this doctrine is no more than a sort of the nestorian christology, that was already condemned by Church. In tum, this position of the Armenian Church gave an occasion to suspect it in falling into the eutychian heresy, that denied the existense of the genuine human nature in Christ. However unbiassed analysis of the dogmatic documents shows the groundlessness of mutual suspicions of both parts, as the similarities of their christoligical formulae are very essential, whereas the distinctions are insignificant. Hence one сап contend, that the mutual irreconcilability of the Armenian Church and diophysite Churches was not caused by the essential differences in understanding of the christological dogma, and depended on political factors. In our time, when there is a world-wide ecumenical movement for reunion of the Christian Churches, the impartial and objective scientific analysis of the christological doctrines of various Churches can assist their mutual understanding.
