The mean free path, the electronic stopping power and the straggling parameter of a heavy charged particle moving through a homogeneous free-electron gas are addressed in the low-velocity regime and within the dielectric formalism using the Lindhard dielectric function. Simple analytical formulas are developed for these macroscopic cross sections, which are more accurate in the whole electron density range than those proposed to date by some authors.
