В марте 1945 г. вслед за денонсацией Москвой советско-турецкого Договора о дружбе и нейтралитете, И. Сталин решил задействовать армянскую церковь по реализации Армянского вопроса. Учитывая, что с 1938 г. Армянская Апостольская церковь существует без своего главы, Москва дала согласиe нa избраниe нового Католикоса Всех Армян. 22 июня 1945 г. большое национально-церковное собрание единогласно избрало Геворга Чорекчяна Католикосом Всех Армян, а 24 июня 1945 г. состоялось его освящение и восшествие на престол под именем Геворга VI. Новый Католикос четко воспринял все директивы Сталина по предстоящему включению армянской церкви в антитурецкyю «территориальнyю» игрy. В связи с чем следует oтметить бoльшyю роль Геворга VI в возбуждении вопроса о возвращении Армении захваченных Турцией западноармянских территорий. In March 1945 after the denouncement of the Soviet-Turkish friendship and neutrality treaty by Moscow, I. Stalin decided to involve the Armenian church in realization of the Armenian question. Considering, that from 1938 the Armenian Apostolic church existed without its chapter, Moscow gave the consent for election of the new Catholicos of All Armenians. As a result, on June 22, 1945 the big national-church assembly unanimously elected Gevorg Chorekchyan the Catholicos of All Armenians, and his consecration and accession to the throne under the name of Gevorg VI on June 24, 1945 took place. The new Catholicos precisely apprehended Stalin's all instructions on forthcoming inclusion of the Armenian church in anti-Turkish “territorial” game. In this connection it is necessary to notice, that role of Gevorg VI in raising the question on returning Armenia West-Armenian territories grasped by Turkey is great.
