Abstract:

"The Battle of Carnival and Lent" by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, the biggest figure of the Dutch Renaissance period is studied in a vast historical context the background of which is the struggle between the Reformation and the Catholic Church. The liberating war of the Dutch people against the power of the Spanish House of Habsburgs lead by Wilhellm of Orange is also a part of the study. The author examines the composition thinking features and artistic methode of the great painter, paying special attention to some specific figures which have a symbolic meaning: the Carnival and the Lent which embody two absolutely different attitudes towards the world, the banner-bearer who expresses the national idea, the two Pilgrims on the spiritual way lead by a clown with a torch, the Watcher's figure on the window which represents the position of the spectator or author, etc. In the article Bruegel is represented not only as an artist, but also a keen spiritual explorer of his time.
Произведение крупнейшего представителя нидерландского Возрождения Питера Брейгеля Старшего "Битва Карнавала и Поста" рассматривается в широком историческом контексте - на фоне борьбы между Реформацией и Католической церковью, а также освободительной войны народа Нидерландов под руководством Вильгельма Оранского против власти испанских Габсбургов. Автор исследует особенности композиционного мышления и художественного метода великого живописца, особое внимание уделяя конкретным образам, имеющим символическое значение: Карнавалу и Посту, в которых олицетворены два полярных отношения к миру, Знаменосцу, выражающему национальную идею, двум идущим духовным путем Странникам-пилигримам, которых ведет Шут с факелом, фигуре Наблюдателя на окне, олицетворяющей позицию зрителя или автора и т. д. В статье Брейгель предстает не только как художник, но и как глубокий духовный исследователь своего времени.
