Abstract:

The foundation of every people’s identity is its spiritual, intangible culture, one of the oldest and richest strata of which is folklore — the system of conceptions, knowledge, values and means of expression transmitted orally from generation to generation. Within Armenian folk tradition a special place belongs to the folklore of Sasun, whose summit is the national epic ‘Sasna Tsrer’ (‘The Daredevils of Sasun’). The folk songs and dances of Sasun, its local legends and traditions, its sayings and winged words, its riddles and khaghiks constitute a distinctive stratum of the Sasun folk heritage. A most important component of the cultural code of this whole is the Sasun dialect, with its singular sonority, its ‘mountain’ rhythm, its ‘heavy’ and ‘slow’ intonation, and its lexical, grammatical, stylistic and emotional particularities. The article examines the Sasun epic narrators who survived the Genocide and in 1920–1921 resettled in the village of Nerkin Sasnashen in the Talin district of Soviet Armenia, and the versions of the epic ‘Sasna Tsrer’ recorded from them by folklore collectors in 1971. Particular attention is devoted to the work of the celebrated narrator Nure Davtyan. From the narrator’s grandchildren we have recorded new folklore materials which complete the figure of Nure Davtyan as a bearer, in her own singular manner, of the folklore of Sasun. The article presents folklore specimens not only in Armenian (in the Sasun dialect) but also in Kurdish, which the narrator employed in her speech.
