Abstract:
The epic “Daredevils of Sassoun” (also known as “David of Sassoun”) has long been translated into various languages around the world and has received the highest acclaim. And today, literary scholars continue to publish studies dedicated to the epic. Among them are many leading researchers at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, as well as literary critics who are members of the Writers’ Union of Armenia, notably Azat Yeghiazaryan and Hayk Hambardzumyan. Already in the preface to the first version of the epic “David of Sassoun”, first recorded by Garegin Srvandztiants and published in 1874, it is stated that the Armenian epic dates back to the pre-Christian period and is linked to the mention of King Sennacherib in the Old Testament, who was killed by his two sons, who subsequently fled to the land of Ararat and settled there. However, the epic took its final shape in the 8th and 10th centuries, during the Armenian people’s heroic struggle against the Arab Caliphate, which culminated in the Armenians’ victory and the founding of the Armenian kingdoms of the Bagratids and the Artsrounids. Christian thought, shrines and rituals are reflected throughout the Armenian heroic epic, from the very first lines to the epilogue. The Holy Mother of God of Marutavank is frequently mentioned; the daredevils of Sassoun speak of this church, accompanied by the Christian maxim: “Bread and wine is the living Lord.” The daredevils of Sassoun follow humane Christian commandments. The epic “David of Sassoun” is a brilliant testament to the Armenian Christian family and the boundless devotion of Armenian women to their families in the name of perpetuating the Armenian people.
