In 1992, in issue 1 of journal «Вестник Древней Истории» («Journal of Ancient History»), R.L. Manaseryan’s article «Internetional relations in the near-east, in the years 80-70 BC (Tigranes II and the troops from the banks of the Araxes)» was published. In this article, researcher made an attempt to clarify the ethnicity of the autonomic tribes from the banks of the Araxes River who came to the military camp of the Armenian king Tigran II the Great, on the eve of this clash with the Romans. At that time, the R.L. Manaseryan, noted that his proposed answer to the question posed by him, with the current state of the sources, would not be without a certain degree of hypothetical. Interpreting the sources in detail, R.L. Manaseryan ruled out the possibility that this tribe could have lived on the Armenian Highland, somewhere along the course of the Araxes River flowing into the Caspian Sea. The researcher believed that the assumption of the residence of this tribe in Great Armenia, during the reign of the Armenian king Tigranes the Great, would require the recognition of a fact allegedly simply incompatible with the political reality of the era [34:152-153]. Based on the above considerations, the R.L. Manaseryan assumed that Plutarch’s report implies not the Armenian Araxes Rivers, but the Central Asian Araxes (Amu Darya) River. The R.L. Manaseryan, while nothing a certain degree of hypothetical nature of his conclusions, nevertheless suggested that they were most likely sakarauks (sagarauks).
