In the second half of the 1980’s various political parties and clubs have been established in Georgia under direct influence of Gorbachove’s policy of “ Prerestroika” . The main goal of these parties was-to achieve political power, and to proclaim the independence o f Georgia. The conflict between old regime and new established parties was inevitable. On April 9, 1989, a peaceful demonstration in the Georgian capital Tbilisi ended up with several being killed by Soviet troops. After this accident, part o f the anticommunist opposition united in the “Round Table—Free Georgia” political bloc, around the former dissidents Merab Kostava and Zviad Gamsakhurdia.
