Abstract:

In the 19th century, during his arrival in the North Caucasus, Russian army officer Leonti Stöder described in detail an Ossetian ritual called “tsoppay” (coppay), which was performed around a person who was dead from lightning. Stöder was personally present at a ceremony when a woman struck by lightning was surrounded by her companions, they shouted for joy and began to sing and dance around the deceased. All the inhabitants of the village gathered around the circle of dancers, ignoring the fact that the thunder was continuing to rage. Their only and primitive refrain was the following: “O, Elia, Elia! ældari copay”. In Ossetian popular beliefs, Elia is the name of Christian Saint Elijah, who was considered to be the ruler of lightning in many Christian traditions. According to Armenian folk beliefs, Prophet Elijah (Yeghia) is the “bringer of rain”, he rides on the clouds with his four-horse chariot, the rumbling of the chariot causes the clouds to thunder, and the sky flashes from the wheels or from the whip hitting the steeds.
ældari coppay”.
