This article presents three previously unpublished documents concerning the Armenians of the Bandırma–Balıkesir diocese. The first is a statistical register of Armenian-inhabited towns and villages within the diocese, compiled by the local National Prelacy at the instruction of the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople. The second is a work by Bishop Barkev Vertanessian, a native of Balıkesir, in which he examines - across separate chapters - the Armenian communities of Bandırma, Edincik, Hay Gyugh (Armenian Village), Balıkesir, Susugherlek, Kirmasti, and Mihaliç. The author of the third document published here is Dr. Mihran Nersessian, who, between 1917 and 1920, remained in Bandırma as an officer in the Ottoman army. During this period, he recorded his memories and impressions of the Armenians of Bandırma and the two nearby villages - Edincik and Hay Gyugh. The documents published here address the geographical location of the aforementioned villages, the size of their Armenian population, their schools and churches, their economic conditions, dialect, and the fate they endured during the Genocide, among other subjects. To date, no comprehensive history of the Armenians of the Bandırma–Balıkesir region has been written, and this publication seeks, in part, to help fill that gap.
