Abstract:
The image of the double -headed eagle, which has found a constant presence in the coats of arms of a number of nations today, has had a long historical path. Unlike many symbols that have changed and disappeared over time, the symbol of the double -headed eagle has preserved its existence for thousands of years. The author argues that, notwithstanding the fact that many objects that date back to the Middle Ages and bear this image are exhibited in European museums, the cradle of its origin is Asia Minor. Indeed, one can come across the earliest prehistoric double -headed eagles carved on stones in the Middle East. It was used by royal Armenian dynasties as well as in medieval Armenian art. According to the author, however, in tհe Middle Ages the image emigrated with Armenian refugees to European countries.
