Abstract:

Yeghia Dndesian was a prominent 19 th century musician and musicologist. He was the author of several important works that reflect his deep concern for the preservation and further development of the national character of Armenian church music. His devotion to the notation of the Armenian “sharakan ”s alone would already have made him an important individual, thanks to his tremendous contribution to the preservation of the ecclesiastical chant tradition of Constantinople. However, he did much more. Until lately Dndesian’s first published work was considered to be the book titled Contents of the Melodies of the Holy Armenian Church According to the Eight Modes , Constantilople 1864. The author, however, sheds light on an ex ceptional book titled “Collection of Church Music, or the Modes of Psalms and Spiritual Hymns”, which was recently discovered in the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople. The book is poorly preserved ; it lacks a cover, has damaged pages, and the author’s name is missing from the title page. The author compares it with Dndesian’s book titled “Element of Music” and concludes that the textual content of both books is nearly identical, with only minor differences concerning their focus: the newly discovered book is a textbook on European musical notation, enriched with notated examples, while the other is a textbook on Limonjian’s notation system. The author argues that the newly discovered textbook was written upon the request of the Armenian Protestant community of Constantinople, in 1856, when Dndesian was only 22 years old, and was likely published anonymously.
