Еще до I в. в Смирне было основано христианское сообщество. В этот период у подножья горы Пагос были найдены развалины церкви, датируемые XVI в. Начиная с XVI в. церкви Смирны были превращены турками в мечети. Подобная участь постигла церкви Св. Иоанна, Св. Аракелоц и другие. В результате город Смирна потерял свое былое христианское обличье. Even in the first century there existed a Christian community in Smyrna. Ruins of ancient churches dating to this period were found at the foot of the Mount Pagos. Since the 16th century the churches in Smyrna were attacked and invaded by the Turks, and some of them were made mosques, or started to be used for other purposes.
