В рядах армянской добровольческой шестой дружины Чаренц в период первой мировой войны с конца сентября до конца декабря 1915 г.участвовал в боях Кавказского фронта. Сопоставление исторических событий и эпизодов поэмы позволяет проследить тот страшно мучительный путь, который дружина прошла до «Мертвого города» Вана. During the first world war from the end of September till the end of December in 1915, in the rows of the sixth Armenian voluntary detachment Charents took part in the battles of the Caucasian front. The comparison of the historical events and episodes of the poem permits us to follow the terrible agonizing road, that the detachment passed up to the „Dead town" Van.
