This article examines the intellectual evolution of Caloust Gosdantian, a 19th-century Ottoman Armenian intellectual, spanning from his early works on spiritualism and mesmerism to his later adherence to positivism and radical materialism. The study predominantly focuses on the period of the Armenian thinker's youth. As this was an era when the boundaries between science and pseudo-science had not yet been definitively established, the author aims to demonstrate that Gosdantian’s spiritualist background, which sought to explain supernatural phenomena through scientific terminology, constituted a continuity rather than a rupture in his intellectual trajectory. Arguing that Gosdantian assumed the role of a mediator by interpreting local beliefs through the lens of Western rationalism, the author highlights his attempts to contextualize religious narratives and supernatural occurrences in light of the contemporary scientific paradigm.
