In epigraphic documents, the name of Amirspasalar, Atabek Avag Zakaryan is mentioned from the end of the 12th century. However, by the late 1220s and early 1230s, epigraphic records indicate a certain shift in his socio political status. Thus, in the paired inscriptions from Shirakavan (677 1228 and 680 1231), he is characterized as a high ranking official in the Georgian royal court, holding the title of amirspasalar . In 1236, Avag wisely made peace with the invading Mongols, accepting their suzerainty. In 1242 1243 , he participated in the campaigns of the Mongol commander Baiju Noyin, capturing the province of Karin and the Sultanate of Iconium (Konya). Around that time, the Mongol nobility sent him to the Great Khan Batu in the north, from where he traveled to Kara korum, the central headquarters of the Mongol empire. At Karakorum, the Mongol nobility recognized his ruling rights over the entire vilayet (province) of Gurjistan (Georgia). According to Georgian sources, before his departure on this journey, Avag was re ferred to by the honorary title Atabek of the Georgian royal court. Upon returning from Karakorum, Avag Zakaryan punished the defiant Georgian noble Egarslan Bakurtsikheli. His name is also mentioned in the inscriptions of Pghndzahank (1245) and Matosavank (1247). In the mention in the church in the village of Mehmana in Artsakh, he is referred to as a peace making prince . Avag Zakaryan passed away in the year 1250.
