The paper focuses on the formation and the religious institutionalisation of the Armenian communities in Astrakhan, Nor Nakhidjrevan and Besarabia of the Catholicosarte of Etchmiadzin, their demographic features, historical trajectory and the shifts in the administrative areas of these prelacies. The author argues that the prelacies were important communal institutions, which, as the size of the community grew, went beyond ecclesiastical administration by dealing with events and ceremonies which developed national and cultural awareness; they also preserved identity and established schools. Furthermore, the prelacies functioned as a bonding institution between the community members and the fatherland and between the community and the host state.
