In 1265, at Haghpat, Vardan Arewelts‘i wrote a commentary on Solomon’s “Song of Songs,” interweaving both lemmas and authorial excerpts from the commentaries of Gregory of Nyssa, Origen of Alexandria, Grigor Narekats‘i, and Hippolytus of Bostra. Through Grigor Narekats‘i’s Commentary, Vardan Arewelts‘i accessed an older text of the “Song of Songs,” which preserved traces of the oldest “hastily” executed translation, as Movsēs Khorenats‘i refers to it. Influenced by this Commentary, he also included, at the end of his work, a commentary on the original passage “I knew that…,” which is distinctive to the Armenian canon only.
The fact that not all of Grigor Narekats‘i’s excerpts are explicitly cited by name in Vardan Arewelts‘i’s commentary suggests that these omissions are not merely the result of scribal errors (though such occur), but rather reflect a deliberate concern to reconcile the interpretations of different text variants of the “Song of Songs.” The study demonstrates that the texts of the “Song of Songs” employed in Narekats‘i’s Commentary and in Vardan Arewelts‘i’s Commentary differ substantially. Recognizing the significance of this, and following Grigor Narekats‘i, Vardan Arewelts‘i renders all the textual variants of the “Song of Songs” (including the “I knew that…” passage) circulating in his era. The variant readings of the same lemmas within the Commentary indicate that, even in Vardan Arewelts‘i’s time, a single, standardized text of the Bible had not been adopted. Compared with Grigor Narekats‘i’s Commentary (977), by the 13th century the “Song of Songs” had already undergone considerable modifications. The interpreter endeavours to reconcile the substantial textual divergences and structural unevenness of the “Song of Songs” by incorporating the variant readings into the exegetical framework, thereby uniting the previously separately copied and independently “living” exemplars into a single, coherent text and commentary. The variant readings cited by Vardan Arewelts‘i are particularly significant: most are not represented in the Zohrapian Bible and may contribute to the identification of older text of the “Song of Songs” that remained in circulation until the 13th century.
В 1265 году Вардан Аревелци в Ахпате составил толкование к «Песни песней» Соломона, переплетя леммы с фрагментами из толкований Григория Нисского, Оригена, Григора Нарекаци и Ипполита Бострийского.
