Abstract:
One of the first things the survivors of the Armenian Genocide did after their settlement in the host lands was establishing compatriotic unions of the cities, towns and villages they were forcefully uprooted from. These compatriotic unions were very instrumental in mobilizing scholars to compile and publish books dedicated to the homeland, its history, population, culture, folklore, education, traditions, agriculture, arts and crafts, dialects, and other ethnographic features. These books were meant to pre serve the legacy and image of the homeland and pass them on to the next generations. Indeed, starting from the 1930s one can come across a significant number of books on different cities, towns and villages of the lost homeland. The author notes, however, that most of these books have very little on music. In fact, the authors have published the scripts of the songs without their musical notes. Through interviews with old survivors and their descendants, which he has conducted since the 1980s, the author has recovered the music of some of these songs, and interestingly has discovered new remnants and bits and pieces of other songs which have not been published anywhere and has published their music too. The author concludes his paper with a study on the Hadjin musical ‘instrument’ debez , the way it was made and its usage.
