Առաջին համաշխարհային պատերազմի սկզբում Հովհաննես Թումանյանը հույս ուներ, որ Ռուսաստանը կհաղթի և պատերազմը սանձազերծողներին՝ մասնավորապես Գերմանիային, Ավստրոհունգարիային և Թուրքիային կպատժի՝ վերջնականապես ազատություն բերելով արևմտահայությանը իր հայրենիքում։ Բանաստեղծը փորձում է ուժերի ներածին չափով իր մասնակցությունը բերել Թուրքիայի պարտությանը։ During the first months of the war Tumanyan was in optimistic mood. He hoped that Russia will win the war and will punish its founders and, in particular Germany, Austria-Hungary and Turkey and finally will bring freedom to his compatriots of Western Armenia in their homeland. The poet is trying to make his mite in the defeat of Turkey.
