Abstract:
The idea of spiritual perfeclion is the essential part of the Christian Revelation. According to the doctrine of Church Fathers the perfection of Christian is the synonym of his union with God. This Union may be attained by means of the long process, which consists of three stages-purification, illumination and deification. The first step thal leads to the perfection is repentance. It purifies the heart of ascetic from the conscqucnces of original sin and concentrates his mind in the heart. Then the ascetic should purify his soul from all passions and affections which disturb the mental peace. As a resull, the soul of ascetic becomes pure and transparent. The next stage is illumination. The principal means at this stage is prayer. There are oral, mental and heart prayer. The essence of illumination is in the contemplation of divine Light which is the uncreated energy of Holy Trinity. The classical example of this contemplation is the mystical experience of Apostles on the Mount Thabor, when they became eye-witnesses of the Transfiguration of Christ. This Light is not contemplated by soul only, it penetrates into mind, heart and body of ascetic and deifies him. This deification is the last stage of process of spiritual perfection of Christian.
