Abstract:

Radiation from an electron bunch moving along the axis of a waveguide loaded with a stack of plates is investigated. A formula is derived for the spectral distribution of the radiation intensity at large distances from the stack. The conditions are specified under which the Cherenkov radiation generated inside the plates on a given waveguide mode is amplified. This feature is illustrated by numerical examples and the qualitative explanation is provided. The amplification effect can be used to develop intense radiation sources in the gigahertz and terahertz frequency ranges.
