В 80-х годах XIX века рожденная на заре национально-освободительного движения газета «Армения», первенец политической периодической печати, ее редактор М. Португалян имели сложные, часто сопровождавшиеся взаимными обвинениями отношения с первой политической партией Арменакан. Несмотря на то, что арменаканы сами себя считали последователями «Армении» и распространителями ее идей (отсюда и название партии), М. Португалян и его соратники категорически отрицали эту связь и неоднократно заявляли, что партия Арменакан не была создана ими, и они ничего общего с ней не имеют. “The Armenia” newspaper, the first of the Armenian political publications that emerged in the 1880s, on the dawn of the national-liberation struggle, and its editor M.Portugalian, had a complex and bumpy relationship with the Armenakan Party, often full of mutual allegations. While people and the Armenakans considered themselves as followers of “The Armenia” newspaper and disseminators of the newspaper’s ideas (this is where they got their name from), M. Portugalian and his team’s members had always categorically denied any affiliation, saying they had nothing to do with the foundation of that body and had no relations with it.
