Abstract:
The article discusses the characters of Claudius and Gertrude from different points of view. Though the former is usually and justly considered a remorseless villain, there are a few passages in the play where he appears to be a contradictory personality and, therefore, has unexpectedly aroused the sympathy of some eminent scholars. As to the latter, she is even more complex and, unlike Claudius, has certain elements of a tragic character.
