Edward Estlin Cummings was a popular American poet, painter, essayist and playwright He experimented with poems as visual objects on the page. His eccentric use of grammar and punctuation are evident in his works. As well as being influenced by notable modemistsincluding Stein and Pound, Cummings’ early work drew upon the imagists experiments of Amy Lowell. Later his visits to Paris exposed him to Dada and surrealism, which in turn permeated his work. Readers sometimes experience a jarring, incomprehensible effect because the poems do not act in accordance with the conventional combinational rules that generate typical English sentence.
