 abstract={The multifaceted activities of Archbishop Sarkis Chalaliants form a unique page in the registers of Armenian national and spiritual life. He personifies the character of the Armenian cleric who recognizes no boundaries in his dedication to the fatherland, the church and education. Chalaliants was one of the most progressive and knowledgeable clerics of his time. He was an author, wrote travelogues and reports, took ethnographic notes, collected examples of popular and national memory. During his visits to different Armenian residential areas he documented the indigenous populationn's cultural, social and religious peculiarities, which became one of his singular philological legacies. In this regard, his travel notes, impressions, analyses are rich primary sources on Armenian history, topography, and the study of socio -cultural progress. Specifically, his topographic descriptions, presentations of the inhabitants' demography, their linguistic and cultural aspects as well as the activities of spiritual and educational centers provide important material to researchers of history. Noteworthy is his patriotic inspiration as he made an extra effort to transfer to the forthcoming generations the centuries -old process and track of Armenian identity formation.},
